Hello Guys! So last year (February 2019) I started my Keto Lifestyle—it was definitely a journey! I learned a lot about myself (not just my eating habits, but my endurance and disciplined mindset to push through), and I found it extremely beneficial. As the holidays neared, I decided to take a break (October-December), and recently picked back (January 2020) up on this journey!
Please note, I am still learning and I am not a health expert or professional, but I thought it’d be important to share my journey with you guys (the basics and why I love it), and answer any questions you all may have! My journey may be completely different from yours, but I’m sure we share some similarities about our specific experiences. What is Keto?
The keto diet is a shorter word for “ketogenic diet” which is basically a low-carb diet with moderate protein and higher-fat that helps you burn fat more effectively. Keto changes the way your body converts food into energy. Your body is put into ketosis when you begin to eat a lot of fat and very few carbs. So in a nutshell, your body is burning fat instead of carbs for fuel.
What should you eat/drink on a Keto diet?
When it comes to your keto diet, you want to make sure you avoid eating too many carbs. The fewer carbs you intake, the more effective you will be in reaching ketosis. Below are a few things you can eat while on the Keto diet:
o Natural fats (butter, olive oil) and high-fat sauces
o Unprocessed meats
o Fish and seafood (salmon)
o Eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled, omelets)
o Vegetables grown above ground (cauliflower, cabbage, avocado, broccoli)
o High-fat dairy
o Water
o Coffee
o Tea
What are the benefits of a Keto diet?
Burns body fat- when you’re on the keto diet, your body is using your stored fat as well as the fat from your diet as fuel, which in turn causes you to lose weight.
Controls your appetite- ketones aide in the suppression of ghrelin, which is your hunger hormone. If your appetite is being reduced, this means you can go longer periods without eating, which encourages your body to dive into its fat stores for energy.
Reduces inflammation- A keto diet will reduce inflammation within your body by switching off your inflammatory pathways and produce fewer free radicals in comparison to glucose.
Fuels your brain- Being that our brains are made up of 60% fat, ketones can provide a good portion of your brain’s energy needs and is way more effective and efficient that the energy we get from glucose.
Increases your energy- When our brains and bodies begin to use ketones for fuel, it allows your energy to increase. The more energy you have, the more capable you are to get things done!

Although these are just a few basics of Keto (based on my experiences and researched knowledge), it’s important to keep in mind, once you reach your desired goals, if you begin to revert back to your old eating habits, there is a possibility you will either return back to your original weight before the diet, or even your previous health situation. It’s pretty much like exercising—if you stop working out, you’ll slowly revert back to your old self.
